Road Cycling Basics: Your First Fast, Fun Miles

Road riding is the quickest way to cover distance and build fitness. Start simple: comfortable kit, a bottle, a small saddle bag, and a route you can shorten if needed. Keep your early rides steady—speed comes naturally once you’re consistent.

Setup tips

  • Saddle height: with your heel on the pedal at the bottom, your leg should be almost straight.
  • Bar position: if your lower back or neck aches, raise the bars or shorten the reach.
  • Tyre pressure: don’t overinflate—use the tyre’s recommended range and adjust for comfort/grip.

Maintenance advice

  • Wipe the chain after wet rides; lube lightly and wipe again.
  • Check brake pads monthly (more often in winter).
  • Inspect tyres for cuts and embedded grit every couple of rides
