POST 4 — Cyclocross: Mud, Speed, and Simple Setup

Want to try cyclocross? Learn how to set up your bike, choose tyres and pressures, improve key skills, and keep your bike running through mud season.

Why cyclocross is so addictive

Cyclocross is short, intense, and chaotic in the best way. It teaches bike handling fast: cornering, braking, traction management, and getting comfortable when the bike is moving underneath you.

It also teaches humility. Everyone fumbles dismounts at first. That’s part of the fun.

Cyclocross setup: keep it simple

Tyres and pressure

Tyres matter more than almost anything.

  • Lower pressure = more grip in mud
  • Higher pressure = less squirm on hardpack

Start conservative, then drop pressure gradually.

Gearing

Many riders use 1x for simplicity. Whatever you run, make sure you have a low enough gear for sloppy climbs and running starts.

Skills to focus on first

  • Smooth cornering: wide entry, look through, gentle exit
  • Dismount/remount practice in a field
  • Running with the bike: shoulder carry basics

Mud maintenance: clean it fast

Mud left on a bike turns into a grinding paste.

After every muddy session

  • Rinse off mud (gently)
  • Dry chain and drivetrain
  • Lube and wipe excess
  • Inspect pads (mud eats them)

CX kit to carry

CX is usually short-course, but training rides need spares:

  • Tube, levers, pump
  • Multitool, quick link
  • Gloves (mud rides destroy hands)
