POST 24 — Tools and Spares: The “Never Walk Home” Kit for Any Discipline

Build a simple, reliable toolkit to avoid getting stranded. Learn what to carry for punctures, chain issues, and quick fixes—plus tips for organising tools by discipline.

The best kit is the kit you’ll actually carry

Carrying tools isn’t about preparing for every disaster—it’s about covering the common problems that stop rides: punctures, loose bolts, chain issues, and minor mechanicals. A small, well-chosen kit turns most issues into a five-minute pause instead of a long walk home.

The trick is building a core kit and then adding discipline-specific extras.

Internal links:

The core kit (works for almost every ride)

  • Spare tube (even if you’re tubeless)
  • Tyre levers
  • Mini pump (CO₂ is fine, but bring a backup plan)
  • Multitool with common hex sizes
  • Quick link for your chain speed
  • Small cash/card + phone

This covers the majority of road and gravel ride-ending issues.

Add-ons by discipline

Road

  • Second tube for longer rides
  • Patch kit as backup
  • A thin emergency layer

Internal link:

Gravel

  • Tyre plugs (tubeless)
  • Small bottle of sealant or sealant injector
  • Spare derailleur hanger if you ride remote routes

Internal link:

MTB

  • Tyre plugs + stronger pump
  • Chain tool (if your multitool doesn’t have one)
  • Cable tie or tape for emergency fixes

Bikepacking

  • Spare brake pads
  • Extra chain lube
  • A few zip ties and a small roll of tape
  • Spare charging cable/power plan

Maintenance: keep your kit usable

Tools fail too.

  • Check your pump works at home
  • Replace old tubes with cracked valves
  • Keep multitool joints clean and lightly oiled
  • Refresh sealant and plugs if they’ve sat for months

The goal: confidence, not clutter

A good kit makes you ride further and worry less. Start with the core kit, note what you actually use over a month, then refine it. That way your “never walk home” setup stays compact, light, and genuinely helpful.
