Axle-Deep on Cannock Chase
Three riders rolled out from The Mansfield this morning and pointed the bikes towards the trails of Cannock Chase. It was one of those days where you know, before you even clip in, that you’re going to get wet. And wet it was — rain from start to finish.
The climb up the Heritage Trail warmed the legs a little, before grinding up towards Marquis Drive. Mostly gravel under tyre, with a bit of single track thrown in to keep things interesting. The trails were waterlogged but rideable — that classic winter mix of firm base with a generous topping of standing water. Some sections were properly boggy. There were puddles up to axle depth and stretches where it genuinely felt like riding down a shallow river rather than a trail.
After working down towards the Stepping Stones, the old railway line offered a steadier pull as we made our way towards Fallow Forest. Along the ridge the headwind didn’t let up — straight into it all the way towards German Military Cemetery. One of those grinds where you just tuck in, keep the pedals turning and remind yourself coffee is coming.

Fallow Forest was a very welcome sight. We were the only ones there — hardly surprising given the weather — which made the stop feel even more deserved. Hot coffee & tea. Bacon roll. Steam rising off jackets. No complaints.
From there it was largely downhill towards Birches Valley and then back home after a very wet, very windy ride that was an absolute heap of fun.
Cold? Yes. Soaked? Completely. Worth it? Every single muddy mile. 🚴♂️
