Spring Gravel Tour: 39 Miles of Chase, Greenway, and Towpath

As we edge toward the end of March, it’s time to put some proper miles in the legs! We’ve put together a fantastic 38.7-mile (62km) gravel loop that takes in the very best of our corner of Staffordshire.

The Route Profile:

With around 1,500ft (450m) of climbing, this route has enough “up” to keep things interesting—mostly through the Chase and the rolling bridleways around Hopwas—but balances it out with the beautifully flat, fast-rolling McClean Way and a gentle canal-side finish into Rugeley.

Where are we going?

  • The Start: Departing from The Mansfield, we head straight into the heart of Cannock Chase.
  • The Middle: We’ll skirt Chasewater before joining the newly opened McClean Way—the traffic-free “cycling highway” between Brownhills and Lichfield.
  • The Adventure: From Lichfield, we dive back onto the bridleways, heading over to the quiet, wooded tracks of Hopwas.
  • The Home Straight: We’ll work our way back toward Lichfield on back lanes before hitting the canal towpath for a flat, social cruise back home to Rugeley.

“Am I fit enough?”

While 39 miles might sound daunting if you’re new to gravel, remember that at Brereton Wheelers, we ride as a group. We’ll be keeping the pace steady and social. There will be plenty of opportunities to stop, refuel, and enjoy the scenery. This is a great “milestone” ride for anyone looking to push their distance in a supportive environment. We have planned the route at an average pace of 8mph with a riding time of just over 5 hours. We will be stopping along the way for a couple of coffee stops.

Preparation is Key

Given the distance and the mixed March weather:

  • Fuel: Bring plenty of water and some pocket snacks (flapjacks, bananas, or gels).
  • Kit: A well-maintained gravel or mountain bike is a must. Check your tyre pressures and pack a basic puncture kit.
  • Layers: March can be four seasons in one day—a light windproof or rain jacket is your best friend!
