POST 20 — Upgrades That Matter: What’s Worth Your Money?

Best Bike Upgrades: What Actually Improves Comfort, Speed, and Reliability

Why “upgrading” often disappoints

A common cycle: you buy a shiny component, expect a transformed ride, then realise your bike still feels the same. That’s because the biggest improvements usually come from contact points, tyres, and reliability, not headline components.

The best upgrades make your bike:

  1. more comfortable
  2. more dependable
  3. easier to use for your style of riding

Before spending money, make sure your basics are sorted.

Upgrade #1: Tyres (the biggest improvement per pound)

If you do one thing, do tyres. The right tyres can:

  • increase comfort
  • improve grip and confidence
  • reduce punctures
  • sometimes even increase speed on real roads

Examples:

  • Road: move to modern 28mm tyres if your frame allows
  • Gravel: choose a tyre that matches your surfaces (semi-slick vs knobbly)
  • Commuting: puncture-resistant tyres save time and stress

Upgrade #2: Contact points (saddle, bars, grips, shoes)

Comfort creates consistency. If you don’t enjoy riding, you won’t do it.

  • A saddle that fits your sit bones
  • Bar tape or grips that reduce hand pressure
  • Shoes that don’t pinch
  • Cleat/foot position that supports your knees

But don’t buy blindly—check setup first.

Upgrade #3: Braking performance

Brakes aren’t glamorous until you need them. Better pads (and fresh rotors if necessary) can improve control massively, especially in winter.

Upgrade #4: Lighting (for commuting and winter)

If you ride on roads, visibility is an upgrade. A good light setup reduces risk and makes riding more pleasant.

Upgrades that are often overrated

  • Ultra-light components for everyday riding
  • Exotic drivetrains if your chain care is poor
  • Aero parts before your fit and tyres are sorted

A good rule of thumb

Upgrade in this order:

  1. Tyres
  2. Fit/contact points
  3. Brakes
  4. Practical accessories (lights, bags)
  5. Everything else
